Intersectoral project on eliminating the unwanted metallic shine of dental implants

Senior scientist Morten Foss (iNANO) collaborates with Elos Medtech and Technical University of Denmark (DTU) on developing dental titanium implants with aesthetic white surfaces. Innovation Fund Denmark invests in the dental surface project with the Grand Solutions programme.

Every year around the world, approx. 10 million dental implants are inserted, and the number is increasing as we live longer and our teeth wear more. Traditionally, dental implants are made of titanium, which is a material with a high degree of biocompatibility that ensures that it easily coalesces with the existing bones of the jaw. On top of the implant is placed an abutment, which, together with the implant, supports the ceramic crown. Often the abutment comes visible by giving a metallic shine through the crown and becomes even visible more if the gum retracts. This results in an aesthetical outcome, which is not so pleasing for the patient.

Elos Medtech has in collaboration with researchers at Technical University of Denmark DTU, the Technical University of Denmark, and the iNANO center at Aarhus University started a new surface project to whiten titanium. The Innovation Fund Denmark has invested 10 million DKK into the research project, which will be finalized by 2022.

Senior scientist Morten Foss at iNANO will be contributing as leader of one of the work packages and receives DKK 2 million as a part of the grant.
