Gothelf's research is truly interdisciplinary and he collaborates with physicists and molecular biologists to study the use of DNA as a programmable molecule to assemble nano building blocks for nano-architecture and functional nanostructures. Gothelf has contributed significantly to the field of the so-called DNA origami method, where he and Centre for DNA Nanotechology was among the first to develop 3D nanostructures including a DNA box with a controllable lid. Gothelf has also published a number of other high-impact papers in DNA origami, DNA-directed chemistry, biosensors and self-organizing structures on surfaces.
