USA

A Paradigm Shift in Accessibility of Mass Spec Systems - Applications in Organic Synthesis, Purification and Detection

Synthetic organic, natural product, peptide and scale-up chemists are involved in synthesizing and characterizing novel compounds through efficient synthetic routes. These synthetic routes involve a variety of reaction conditions and purification steps which need to be optimized to yield the best results. Mass spectrometry offers an efficient and accurate technique to characterize these compounds at each step which enables a chemist to achieve ideal reaction conditions, confirm desired molecular ion formation, characterize impurities, move more efficiently toward future synthesis steps, and eventually the final registration of compounds. Traditionally, mass spec instrumentation has been available in core analytical laboratories. This invariably meant that synthetic chemists had limited access to mass spec technology for their routine work. However, Advion’s lab or hood-based Compact Mass Spec system (the expression CMS) enables:

TLC-MS for direct MS analysis of TLC spots (TLC-MS)

Direct analysis of solids & liquids with ASAP probe,

Stand-alone system for direct injection measurements (e.g., for reaction monitoring)

A range of normal phase flash chromatography systems for normal phase Flash-MS

As a MS detector for any HPLC systems, UPLC systems, IC and SFC systems

This leads to workflow efficiency, faster decision-making, and saving valuable time. Major features of the system include its flexibility, compact size, high efficiency and accuracy as well as affordability.

Biography
Dr. Gupta earned a PhD degree in Chemistry from Punjab University India with Prof. K.K.Bhasin and then spent more than 2 years as Post-Doctoral fellow at Uppsala University Sweden with Prof. Lars Engman researching organo-chalcogen free-radical heterocyclic synthesis and reaction mechanisms. Later Dr. Gupta spent about 2 years at Melbourne University Australia continuing his work on free-radical synthesis. He has published more than 13 research publications and a book chapter. He specializes in free radical organic synthesis, microwave synthesis, automated purification and characterization of small molecules.

Host: Professor Troels Skrydstrup, iNANO & Dept. of Chemistry, Aarhus University
