On the left, the model that has previously appeared in the textbooks, and on the right, the new model. Until now, it has been known that the antigen (light blue) is able to bind several B-cell receptors (purple) on the surface of the cell. They bring together a number of signal molecules (dark blue and black), so that a signal is sent into the cell (the lightning symbol). The researchers have now shown that the model on the right also works. This is revolutionary, because it means that it is not the actual act of bringing the signal molecules together that leads to activation, but a fundamentally different mechanism. In the study the researchers suggest how this could work, but this part has not yet been demonstrated with certainty. Illustration: Søren E. Degn, created in BioRender.
