Profile

Research, Leadership and Clinical Impact

Michael Borre is Clinical Professor of Urology at Aarhus University and Senior Consultant at the Department of Urology, Aarhus University Hospital.

For more than three decades, his clinical and academic career has focused on improving the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of patients with prostate cancer through research, multidisciplinary collaboration and the implementation of scientific evidence into everyday clinical practice.

Prostate cancer is characterised by considerable biological heterogeneity, and one of the major challenges is identifying patients who require treatment while avoiding unnecessary investigations and overtreatment in men with indolent disease. This challenge has been the unifying theme throughout his research—from early studies of prognostic biomarkers to current work integrating advanced imaging, molecular diagnostics, artificial intelligence and nationwide clinical data.

His research spans translational cancer biology, clinical trials, epidemiology, implementation science and healthcare quality improvement. Across these disciplines, the overarching objective has been to bridge biological insight, technological innovation and clinical decision-making, enabling scientific discoveries to be translated into measurable improvements in patient care.

 Current Research Interests

Current research includes:

Precision diagnostics in prostate cancer
Multiparametric MRI and PSMA PET
Molecular biomarkers and liquid biopsy
Artificial intelligence and clinical decision support
National quality registries and Real World Data
Clinical epidemiology
Implementation of evidence-based diagnostic and therapeutic strategies
 Clinical Leadership and Quality Improvement

Alongside his academic research, Michael Borre has devoted much of his career to translating scientific evidence into improvements in clinical practice.

Through national collaborative initiatives, he has contributed to the development of clinical guidelines, quality indicators and nationwide clinical quality registries that support systematic monitoring and continuous improvement of prostate cancer care throughout Denmark.

As Chairman of the Danish Prostate Cancer Group (DAPROCA) and the Danish Prostate Cancer Registry (DAPROCAdata), he has played a leading role in developing national quality programmes and implementing new diagnostic pathways. He previously served as Chairman of the Danish Multidisciplinary Cancer Groups (DMCG.dk), the Danish Urological Cancer Group (DUCG) and the Danish Urological Association (DUS).

International Collaboration

His research is conducted in close collaboration with Danish and international academic partners and encompasses investigator-initiated clinical studies, nationwide registry-based research and international multicentre collaborations.

Current projects focus on AI-supported clinical decision systems, integration of advanced imaging and molecular biomarkers, and the application of nationwide healthcare data to improve quality of care and support personalised treatment strategies.

Academic Contributions

Michael Borre has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed scientific publications, with an H-index of 59 and more than 13,500 citations.

He has supervised more than 30 PhD students and research fellows, served as principal investigator in numerous national and international clinical studies, and acted as evaluator of PhD theses and doctoral dissertations at Danish and international universities.

Looking Ahead

The future of prostate cancer care will depend on the integration of advanced imaging, molecular biomarkers, artificial intelligence and continuously updated clinical data into routine clinical decision-making.

Throughout his career, Michael Borre's research has been characterised by a commitment to translating scientific discoveries into clinical practice. His current research programme builds on this ambition through the development of precision diagnostics, AI-supported decision systems and nationwide quality monitoring, with the aim of delivering more accurate, more consistent and more evidence-based prostate cancer care.
