The aim of ERC Consolidator Grants is to enhance outstanding and innovative research and is targeted at experienced researchers who are committed to consolidating their research and research career. Associate Professor Birgitte Städler has received one of these prestigious grants for the project 'ArtHep' where she will use it for creating artifical tissue for people with liver diseases.

The global epidemics of obesity and diabetes type 2 lead to higher abundancy of chronic liver diseases increasing the demand for liver transplants or extracorporeal devices to stabilize patients with acute liver failure for subsequent medical interventions.

ArtHep aims at the assembly of liver-like tissue, consisting of biological and synthetic entities, mimicking the core structure elements and key functions of the liver.

The Stadler group supported by 3 collaborators will accomplish the interdisciplinary research challenges in ArtHep, going across the length-scale from artificial enzymes, over synthetic organelles and cells to bionic tissue for transplantation into animal models or integration into extracorporeal devices.

The research team will pioneer the combination for cell mimicry and tissue engineering for liver-related applications.

Seven Danish researchers have received the ERC Consolidator grant this year and of these three have been awarded to researchers at Science and Technology. Read more about these three awards here (in Danish only).
