Research from Associate Professor Duncan Sutherland on proteins in nanoparticle toxicity published in Nature Communications.

A research paper by Teodora Miclăuş  et al. demonstrates that weakly attached proteins and consequently local microenvironments can matter for nanoparticle toxicity.

The paper shows for the first time that weakly attached proteins, in the so called protein soft corona, can influence nanoparticle toxicity. Dynamic interactions of proteins at Ag nanoparticles modulate the conversion of ‘toxic’ Ag to ‘non-toxic’ AgS.

The work was done in collaboration with associate professor Christiane Beer at the Institute of Public Health,  professor Jan Enghild at iNANO/MBG and Jacques Chevalier at Department of Physics and Astronomy.
