Organic Photoredox Catalysis with Carbon Nitride 2.0. A “Dynamic Duo” of Potassium Poly(heptazine imide) and Elemental Sulfur

Carbon nitride based photocatalysis has become a well acknowledged tool enabling water splitting, CO2 reduction and pollutants degradation using visible light as energy input. Despite its high potential in photocatalysis, there are only few reports on carbon nitrides application in organic photoredox catalysis. Herein, we present a novel highly crystalline carbon nitride material – potassium poly(heptazine imide). A combination of potassium poly(heptazine imide) photocatalyst and elemental sulfur under visible light irradiation works as a versatile, safe and recyclable sulfurizing agent affording a variety of valuable chemicals, e.g. 1,3,4-oxadizoles, thioamides and dibenzyldisulfides.
