Six iNANO Researchers Awarded Carlsberg Foundation Grants

Six researchers from iNANO, Aarhus University, have been awarded grants from the Carlsberg Foundation, supporting free basic research of high quality across various career stages in Danish research environments. The grants aim to promote innovative and groundbreaking scientific projects.

Semper Ardens Advance Grants
Two researchers, Professor Mogens Christensen and Professor Bo Brummerstedt Iversen, received Semper Ardens Advance grants, five-year funding opportunities for internationally recognized researchers conducting visionary scientific activities at the highest level.

  • Professor Mogens Christensen
    Project Title: Novel magnets through interdisciplinarity and nanocomposites (NOMAGIC)
    The project will create a revolutionary nanocomposite magnet by combining two magnetic materials to achieve properties greater than the sum of their parts. Avoiding rare earth elements, this new magnet could double the magnetic strength of current materials, boosting the efficiency of wind turbines and electric cars by 70-100%. Advanced in situ techniques and theoretical modeling will enable the synthesis of these nanocomposites across multiple scales, resulting in unprecedented magnetic performance.
  • Professor Bo Brummerstedt Iversen
    Project Title: Catching photoactive materials in action
    This project will develop the first method to determine atomic structures of photoexcited materials. Using ultrafast X-ray diffraction, the team will capture light-driven processes with femtosecond time resolution, providing insight into quantum phenomena and enabling the design of improved photoactive materials critical for the green transition.

Research Infrastructure Grants
Four additional researchers—Professor Milena Corredig, Professor Merete Bilde, Associate Professor Ebbe Sloth Andersen, and Professor Niels Chr. Nielsen—received Research Infrastructure grants to acquire cutting-edge instruments for innovative projects.

  • Professor Milena Corredig
    Project Title: Bridging the mesoscale of food and other soft materials by Confocal Raman microscopy
    This project will use confocal Raman microscopy to explore the chemical structure of food and biological materials. By generating detailed chemical images at the microscale, the research will contribute to the development of more sustainable food and better insights into soft material design.
  • Professor Merete Bilde
    Project Title: Small particles, large effects: Sizing airborne aerosol particles
    Aerosol particles, present in both indoor and outdoor air, impact air quality and climate. This project will acquire an instrument capable of measuring aerosol particle sizes across an exceptionally wide range, from a few nanometers to several micrometers, providing critical data for air quality and climate research.
  • Associate Professor Ebbe Sloth Andersen
    Project Title: Ultracentrifuge for native purification of biomolecules and vesicles
    Biological cells act as factories for producing valuable biomolecules like insulin, mRNA vaccines, and drug delivery vesicles. This project will use ultrafast centrifugation to purify these biomolecules from cell components, enabling the production of high-purity samples essential for medicine and biotechnology.
  • Professor Niels Chr. Nielsen
    Project Title: EPR for Quantum Sensor Development and support to Chemistry, Materials, Nanoscience, and Bioscience
    Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measures signals from free electrons, providing insights into nanoscale structures and quantum sensing. This project will advance quantum sensor development and support research in chemistry, materials science, nanoscience, and bioscience.
