Birkedal group on the cover of Advanced Engineering Materials
The cover art illustrates 3D printed mother-of-pearl model structures
The group of Henrik Birkedal has recently published in Advanced Engineering Materials together with researchers from the Wyss Institute of Harvard University.
The paper (DOI 10.1002/adem.201770018) describes a new approach to studying complex materials by combining 3D printing with parametric modeling design tools traditionally used in architecture. The new approach is exemplified by a study of the importance of various structural design parameters for the mechanical performance of mother-of-pearl (nacre) like structures, one of which is shown on the cover. The paper was highlighted in Advanced Science News.
