Fabrication and Application of Artificial Cell Membrane

The cell membrane is one of the most important components of a cell because it separates the interior of all cells from the outside environment. It plays important roles in a variety of cellular processes such as cell adhesion, ion conductivity and cell signalling etc. Due to the complexity of cell membranes, the artificial cell membranes are used to study the biophysical properties of cell membranes. It is an ideal platform for studying ion channel study, screening drugs, and understanding origins of life. In this talk, several artificial cell models will be presented regarding their fabrication methods and their applications on ion channel study, membrane protein separation in lipid bilayer environment under electric fields, controlled drug release triggered by magnetic fields, etc.

Host: Associate professor Brigitte Städler, Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center, Aarhus University
