Sustainability and engineering solutions - the big picture

The challenges facing our civilization are many. This is exemplified by the UN sustainability goals. In this overview we focus on the energy problem and explore the coupling between economic growth and energy consumption. We also consider the role of technological solutions, the technological needs and historical impact of new technology. Finally, we emphasize how the sheer scale of the energy problem places certain constraints on which technologies can be implemented on the relevant scale.
