Micro and Nanoengineering Approaches to Bone Tissue Engineering

Orthopedic injuries resulting from disease, trauma, and age influence millions of people worldwide. The many issues related to harvesting bone tissue from either a patient or donor has made bone transplantation only a partial solution for the repair of orthopedic injuries. Hydrogel-based stem cell therapies and 3D printed bone transplants may offer an alternative to the autologous treatments used in the clinic today. Since cells respond to combinatorial signals rather than single signals, high-throughput screening of cell behaviour within combinatorial environments are required to fully unveil these innovations. To address, this grand challenge, we have used a microprinter to generate three-dimensional (3D) cellular microarrays for identification of osteogenic hydrogels in a rapid and cost-efficient manner.
