Understanding and Mimicking the Hierarchical Structure in Human Dental Enamel

Synchrotron x-ray diffraction and complementary techniques have been used to study the crystallographic properties and nanostructure of human dental enamel at different stages of mineralization in order to understand the biomineralization process. Organised apatite structures which mimic the hierarchical features observed in dental enamel have been produced synthetically, with a motivation to develop novel routes to control enamel repair and regeneration.
