Julián received the LEO foundation project grant to develop chemically modified RNA aptamers to target Langerhans cells (LC) or block immune responses, with the goal of creating new treatment options for the autoimmune disease vitiligo. Together with his colaborators Prof. Patrizia Stoitzner (Medical University of Innsbruck), Prof. Steffen Thiel (Aarhus University), Prof. Claus Johansen (Aarhus University Hospital), and Prof. Niels Schaft (University Hospital Erlangen), the Valero group will use the money to explore various approaches to dampen the autoimmune process in vitiligo. Congratulations!
If you want to learn more about this you can check out the news-release of iNANO.
Julián received the ERC Consolidator Grant for the biomolecular regulation with interlocked cyclic oligonucleotides (BioRIcON). Within this project the aim is to develop a novel class of biohybrid interlocked molecules (BIMs) that mimic the function of proteions and enable precise biomolecular regulation. Congratulations!
If you want to learn more about this you can check out the news-release of iNANO or MBG.
November 2024 - Meetings and Conferences
Julián, Jørgen, Laia, and Kevin traveled to Garching, Germany, for the final VIROFIGHT symposium to conclude the collaborative project and present their results. The Virofight project focused on developing DNA nano-shells with molecular binders to trap and neutralize various viruses.
November 2024 - Group
Kevin Neis did successfully defend his PhD. In a fruitful discussion with Prof. Oliver Seitz (Humboldt-Universität, Berlin) and Prof. Ciara Kathleen O’Sullivan(Universitat Rovira I Virgili, Spain) he defended his work on the development of modified RNA aptamers opening possibilities for enhanced, longer-lasting antiviral treatments and applications in virus detection and therapy.
October 2024 - Meetings and Conferences
Together with group members from Jørgen Kjems, our new Master students as well as Julián joined the annual meeting of the Danish RNA Society. Here, they got the opportunity to discuss their research with some posters and learn about recent advances and current research in the RNA world.
October 2024 - Meetings and Conferences
Together with group members from Jørgen Kjems, Kevin joined the conference in Pamplona. Here, he got the opportunity to discuss his research with a presentation.
Laia received a research grant from the Villum foundation for her unconventional ideas. With the rewarded money she will investigate dynamic molecular imprinted RNAs to decipher cellular landscapes. Congratulations!
We want to welcome Kirstine to the Valero group. After finishing her PhD in Jørgen Kjems lab, she will be working as a postdoc developing aptamers and targeting toxins troubling the food industry for the upcoming year.
We want to welcome Nete and Sophia to the Valero group. To finalize their master studies they will work on their own little research projects learning about nanopore sensing and RNA-flowers throughout the upcoming year.
August 2024 - Activities
Together with the Kjems lab and Gothelf lab we participated in the DHL-relay, running 5x5 km, and enjoyed a sporty evening with a lot of food, drinks and good company.
August 2024 - Meetings and Conferences
As part of the organizing committee Julián and the whole group helped with the planning and setup of the ArtBio conference at iNANO. Throughout the conference we learnd a lot about ongoing research and progresses in artificial biology and got the opportunity of fruitful discussions throughout the postersession, where Ida, Thea and Kevin were presenting the ongoing research in the Valero lab. Kevin also got the opportunity to rise awareness to his research with a speed talk. Throughout joined dinners and activities we got to meet and mingle with PhDs, postdocs and professors from all over Europe and abroad and hope for long lasting connections.
We want to welcome Kevin to the Valero group. After finishing his PhD in Jørgen Kjems lab, he will be working as a postdoc in the Valero and Kjems group on developing novel influenza antivirals using RNA and polymer chemistries.
We want to welcome Rasmus to the Valero group. Within his PhD-project he will be focusing on modifying mRNA for enhancing its stability and protein translation for the upcoming years.
May 2024 - Meetings and Conferences
This year Ida and Thea represented the Valero lab at the MBG annual meeting, where they presented their research projects with a poster and got to learn about research performed by other PhDs and Postdocs at MBG. Throughout the lectures they got insight into ongoing research on solving biological questions through Cryo-EM imaging and Zebrafish-related studies. Finishing the day with a joined dinner, they got to meet and mingle with other faculty members in a relaxed atmosphere.
May 2024 - Meetings and Conferences
We joined the iNANO annual meeting, where we presented the research and methods used in the Valero lab and got to learn about research performed by other labs at iNANO. Throughout the lectures we got insight into ongoing research of Quantum Computing and the endless possibilities using DNA-origami. Finishing the day with a joined dinner, we got to meet and mingle with other faculty members in a relaxed atmosphere.
May 2024 - Activities
Together with the Kjems lab and Andersen lab we enjoyed two wonderful days in Molslaboratoriet, talking about science, learning how to improve scientific writing and outreach and getting to know each other.
We want to welcome Thea to the Valero group. She will be working on her PhD-project designing tailored, multivalent aptameric structures for enhanced targeting for the upcoming years.
