Frozen foxes break escape room record in Hasselager

A team of six of us tried out the escape room "The Lab" at escapegames in Hasselager. In the words of the guy running the place we "broke the game" and smashed the room record by more than 8 and a half minutes finishing the 60 minute escape room in 25 minutes and 11 seconds. It was great fun and shows that all our academic skills are useful for something other than science.

Nanooptics

Nanosensors to measure wine dryness:

Joana Guerreiro developed a biosensor based on plasmonic optical detection that can be used to study the interactions of small molecules with proteins. The approach is able both to quantify the amounts of molecules binding (and thus binding affinity) but also to study changes of protein conformation induced by the interaction. The work was published in ACS Nano in July 2014 (http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/nn501962y) The work was a collaboration between the group in Aarhus and groups in Porto in Portugal.

The approach can be used to study astringency of wines (the feeling of dryness in the mouth when you drink many red wines) using salivary proteins as a sensor element as a mimic og the mouth. This was highlighted by TV2 in Denmark and by Reuters internationally.

Research Grant

FTP individual postdoc grant awarded:

Former Ph.D. student Yuya Hayashi has received an individual postdoc grant (1,998,053 kr.) from the Danish Council for Independent Research | Technology and Production Sciences (FTP). The new project entitled DANiim - Danio rerio (zebrafish) Innate Immunity Model for Bionanoscience aims to establish the use of zebrafish as an ethically-sound vertebrate model for bionanoscience studies at pre-clinical screening stages. The project brings together state-of-the-art techniques in transgenic research and nanoparticle-protein characterisation, bridging 3 groups at Aarhus University (iNANO and Dept. of Molecular Biology and Genetics) and 2 groups at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany.

Social Activity

The 4th Floor Survivors team won the football tournament:

Together with our colleagues from the good old 4th floor lab triumphed in the final and beat last year's winners the CMC Besenballers at the 2nd iNANO football tournament 2014. Congratulations!

Research Article

Article featured on the journal cover:

A research article from our group was featured on the journal cover of Environmental Science & Technology (ACS Publications). The article entitled Species Differences Take Shape at Nanoparticles: Protein Corona Made of the Native Repertoire Assists Cellular Interaction provides a proof of concept that differences in the origin of biomolecules can influence nanoparticle-protein interactions and how cells 'see' them. Science Communication

An EC-funded 7 min video on nanotoxicology:

As a part of EU FP7 NanOpinion project (nanopinion.eu), we have produced a short video on current nano-research to facilitate communication with general public. The Ph.D. student Yuya Hayashi starred in the video along with his own narration on why he was interested in the nano-research, how he achieved collaboration with colleagues and what he thought about the life of being a Ph.D. student. The video explains the environmental impacts of nanosilver from an earthworm's point of view, and has been used for NanOpinion's educational programme across 15 EU countries. The video was also aired by the Danish national TV channel on 20.10.2013 (DR K Danskernes Akademi "De miljømæssige konsekvenser af nanosilver").
