2023.06.15 | iNANO | Birefringence image of narwhal tusk wins second place in Science as Art competition

Congratulations to group member Adrián R. Palomo for winning second place in this year's Science as Art competition at iNANO.

In his image, the cross-section of a narwhal tusk was measured using birefringence microscopy revealing the different orientations of the collagen fibrils in the tusk. Poorly oriented collagen appears in grey tones and highly ordered collagen shows bright colors corresponding to the different in-plane orientations.

2023.06.12 | iNANO | Group member Anne Marie obtains her master's degree and is accepted into the nanoscience PhD programme

Congratulations to Anne Marie M. Faaborg who has obtained her master's degree in chemistry after conducting a beautiful project in our group on the 3D microstructure of the mantis shrimp eye using laboratory phase-contrast CT.

We look forward to welcoming Anne Marie back as a PhD student after the summer holidays!

2023.05.01 | iNANO| "new" postdoc in the group

We are happy to welcome previous PhD student in the group, Maja Østergaard back as a postdoc. She will be working on analysis of bone structure data using machine learning.

We have been so fortunate to work with researchers from the Skrydstrup group and Danish Technological Institute who have developed a chemical process to extract virgin-grade materials from wind turbine blades in one process. The work has been published in nature.

We welcome Anastasiia Sadetskaia and Adrian Rodriguez-Palomo to the group. Anastasiia starts as PhD student and will work on the structure of bone while Adrian is a postdoc and will work on narwhal tusk structure.

First general user experiment at the Danish beamline DanMAX 

Group members Thorbjørn Erik Køppen Christensen and Peter Alling Vibe as well as AXIA manager Nina K. Wittig have travelled to Lund in Sweden to conduct scanning X-ray scattering and fluorescence experiments to elucidate the mantis shrimp hammer structure at the DanMAX materials science beamline at the MAX-IV Laboratory.

First measurements on new AXIA X-ray microscope 

A state-of-the-art X-ray microscope capable of sub-micrometer 3D resolution has been installed at iNANO as part of AXIA and first measurements are promising! AXIA is a new research infrastructure aimed at multi-scale X-ray imaging of bone and other complex materials spearheaded by Henrik Birkedal.

Henrik Birkedal was interviewed to Danish national newspaper Politiken 2021/01/05 on his group's involvement in the development of mussel inspired leather adhesives, which occurs in a MUDP project funded by the Ministry of Environment of Denmark.

New grant to study Narwhal tusks 

We have been awarded 14,359,011 NOK to study narwhal tusks in a NordForsk interdisciplinary project “Narwhal tusks: a tale with a twist”. The project is a Scandinavian collaboration with the groups of Marianne Liebi (Charlmers University of Technology, Sweden) and Mads Peter Heide-Jørgensen (Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, Greenland)

Postdoc opening in Multiscale tomography

We have a postdoc opening on 3D X-ray imaging of bone in the group. We are developing a new set up for mesoscale 3D multiscale X-ray tomographic imaging. The ambition is to enable collection of 3D tomographic data with a voxel to image ratio of 10^4-10^5 (10000-100000) thus providing an unprecedented information density.
